ABOUT THIS PIECE
Mary Oliver wrote of the Great Horned owl: “In January and February I walk in the woods and look for a large nest in a tall tree. In my mind’s eye I see the great horned, the early nester, sitting upon her bulk of sticks, like an old woman on a raft.” That image has stayed with me since I first read it. There is something so regal about this creature, as though they bare the weight of wisdom with seriousness and solemnity.
The name of this piece was inspired by the poetry of Mary Oliver, who wrote many words about owls, their at once mysterious and wholly grounded nature, and connection to all facets of the web of life.
