Macaw in watercolour
and coloured pencil

In this tutorial I have taken what I learned from our Dürer study, and applied it to a modern reference. I have also brought in a modern tool, coloured pencil.

Coloured pencil and watercolour work beautifully together, and if you like, or are curious about, both mediums this sketchbook adventure could be a lovely place to experiment with both.

Don’t forget, THERE ARE NO RULES.

Rules are for roads, where they keep us safe.

You are safe in your sketchbook practice (even if we have to remind ourselves of that sometimes) and you can play and experiment and discover so many things when you let yourself do that, to be curious and chase that curiosity.

You will see that I changed my mind in a BIIGG way twice in this tutorial. That is perfectly fine too, you get inspired, you find new rabbit holes to jump feet first down, it is all sorts of wonderful! Let that happen in this space, feel empowered to change your mind, this is where you get to do that for yourself.

Combine as many mediums as you would like, think about ways you can bring elements of other master studies or of your previous work in.

Become familiar enough with your tools that you start to open doors in your secret sketchbook garden that you had not realised were there before.

Creativity, art making, is a lifelong adventure.

You have time, because you have right now, and that is all any of us has.

Do the things that bring your creative wild heart such joy. It is your gift to yourself, but also to the rest of us.

Thank you for showing up for yourself, you make the world a better place,
and I truly mean that.
